Note: I am not into comics. I enjoy the movies but never followed the comics.
I just realized while listening to a podcast about clowns that Harley Quinn was clearly and cleverly named after harlequins which were a type of clown.
I thought a harlequin was just a call girl or a crude name for one, which I think is true but the fact that it's a clown makes it much more relevant
Please tell me that I'm the last person to figure this out.

Fuck's sake, man, I don't know who's worse; you or Purse. Probably Purse; he hasn't even seen Deadpool yet.
BTW, the word you're thinking of for call girl is "harlot", although there is a huge collection of trashy "romance" novels under the brand name of Harlequin, so that might be what's causing the crossover confusion.

Harley Quinn is a variation of Harlequin. She started out as a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum, Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel, who started psychoanalizing The Joker until he turned the tables on her and turned her into his on and off again girlfriend/accomplice.

Golden Age Green Lantern had a villainess called Harlequin back in the 1940's. He later married her.
