Character Name: Umeji
Hometown: Kobe, Japan
Height: 5’9”
Weight: 182 lbs.
Alignment: neutral
In-Ring Style: Technical, Striker, high flying
Bio: Once a staple in the Japan circuits, Umeji came to America on the lure of greatness by American promoter, Stuart “Stewie” Mendelsohn. He brings a no-nonsense approach to his work and rarely enjoys the company of others. He takes part in the arts of haiku and Noh. Masked theater gave him the idea for an old persona (Ryū, a Ninja). He keeps the mask as a symbol of how far he’s come. He now loathes American culture while being led by the hand of an unscrupulous manager. Most think he’s a prick—he is one—but that never gets in the way of the squared circle. That baneful love of every pro wrestler.
Umeji has five younger siblings and no surviving parents. They are his true joy in life. His brother, Tōmo, wants to follow in his footsteps—much to the chagrin of the eldest brother. Umeji also has a smoking habit that even his manager finds troublesome. His greatest regret is that he cannot sing. Wherein his sister, Akane, sates this lifelong desire with her beautiful voice and shamisen skill. Siblings are the last vestige of the Japan he misses dearly. Sadly, it seems the ring offers what life cannot.
Attire: Umeji tapes his wrists. He wears kickpads over white, full-length trunks. He pairs this with a shiny, white (black at PPVs) suit with no shirt. He has no tattoos. His shoes look fashionable but are actually functional for competition.
Theme song: “Katana Groove” – Tomoyasu Hotei
Pic Base: Eikichi Yazawa
Entrance:
Lights turn deep blue, lowering as a stage crew rushes rushes into action pushing taiko drums. Lights flicker violet shades as male and female performers drum an upbeat rhythm. Their patten ends on a long roll dimming alongside stage lights. From the darkness, a haiku pulses across the sceen in royal blue letters:
King on his great rock
All things realized chaos
One stood after wrath
Drummers strike up another roll before hitting a sharp caesura.... So begins opening rifts to "Katana Groove" by Hotei accompanied by the taiko players. Lights rise to unveil a GOT sort of throne set made to look like a volcanic mountain. Two young boys, dressed in all white robes and sporting topknots, flank this grand chair. Between them sits Umeji dressed in a blue kimono-style robe with matching tights underneath. Traditional symbols embroider its silky sleeves. His face hides behind the blue mask of the wrathful Fudo--holding a sword and golden noose in the right and left hands--done in the Noh tradition. The Rising Stars Title fastens his waist. Umeji rises to a big pop while handing off the weapons to each child. He approaches central to the ramp in a theatric steps. Umeji circles around to the stairs then hops the ropes straight into a warmup combo. Holding a high kick for several seconds, he then lowers the mask to a big pop. Lights return to normal with Umeji shedding extra layers down to blue-themed wrestling gear.
