Ok so thanks to an awesome comic book shop moving in across the street from my apartment, I've found myself getting back into comic books. Recently I've been digging into the Valiant catalogue with Rai, Faith, Bloodshot, and the Valiant. I also just recently picked up the first three issues of Wacky Raceland from DC, and I'm loving it. It's a gritty post apocalyptic reboot of the old Hanna Barbera Wacky Racers cartoon. It's sort of Death Race meets Fury Road and it is phenomenal. We also picked up the first issue of a graphic novel called Paper Girls and I'm loving that too. That one very much reminds me of like Goonies and Monster Squad. That old school 80's preteen aesthetic. Also picked up issue one of DC Rebirth Batgirl but haven't gotten to reading it yet. Anyway, how about you all? Anyone got anything they can recommend or suggest I avoid?

Moon Knight is a great read right now. Seems to be immune to all the crossover crap that's going on.

Been already suggesting a shit load of stuff to Wentworth for a while, but I have to redouble his suggestion on Paper Girls, like a Girl Goonies meets sci-fi, and its written by the same guy who writes Saga (one of my favorites), Y: The Last Man (multi-Eisner award winning series), Ex Machina, and Runaways, needless to say very talented writer.
Plenty of classics people can always visit like the original Hellblazer series (before the John Constantine series and Rebirth: Hellblazer series), seriously one of my favorite series of all time with picture perfect clever writing. Also Preacher, can never go wrong with violence and irreverent humor haha (Arseface for president), and if you like that, I suggest any of you check out The Boys (same writer), a great lambasting of the super hero genre with a great twist of the world's perspective on heroes, also VERY irreverent and violent as well.
Also, I feel it wouldn't be fair to get into comics and ignore Manga, got a few suggests there as well:
Berserk. Know some fans of the anime lurk around the forum, but the Manga is just fucking perfect (still love the anime though), there is a legit sense of subtlety in the characterization and the development of motivations. We are talking some Game of Thrones level writing, with some equally difficult moments to get through, even when you see them coming. The Gatts character is one of those characters that starts out seeming just another nihilistic type, but the more you learn the deeper his whole view on life becomes, everything from his view on humanity to his aversion to being touched. He has seriously become one of my favorite characters in Manga just for how he develops from heartless figure to misunderstood warrior.
20th Century Boys. Straight one of the smartest manga's I've ever read. The use of non-linear story telling is precise and with a point as a story of nostalgia slowly turns into a sci-fi nightmarish struggle into a dystopian scenario. The plot points are utilized perfectly as it seems nothing really goes to waste. Everything more or less seems important and goes into consideration for the various motivations in the story. Plus the use of visual cues is amazing and on point, creating some fantastic moments in the story.
Oyasumi Pun Pun. FUCKING SURREAL! The humor in this story is really out there, but its amazing and genuinely hilarious and really makes all the images that much more potent as, even with all its strangeness, these 'coming-of-age' images come off very familiar with all its 'misunderstandings', confusion, and anxiety. Its easy to write it off early on as just strange, but the farther you get, the more engaging and sadder it becomes. If you love your humor strange and sometimes dark, and you like your stories intimate with wild images, I can't suggest this enough.
Spiral. Anyone who has gone down this road with me knows I have a very unabashed hard on for Junji Ito. The man is a horror legend and Spiral is CLEARLY his masterpiece. It throws out convention for the sake of a potently horrifying image and then it goes off the rails from there into this sort of nightmarish vision the invokes the styles and ideas of Lovecraft and other weird tales. Junji just has this way to write bizarre stories that just work without the need of real world logic, just the logic of the world he creates.
So much stuff to cover, much like with Wentworth I've found a new passion for all of it and I can't wait to find even more shit.

Man, if I had a comic shop near me, most of my money would go towards that. But, I have to drive like two hours to a big city, and then another hour into the city just to get a comic. So, basically, I don't read a lot of comics. I wish I could, but that would involve buying a lot of them online which I don't like to do too often.
The only comic I have read is The Walking Dead comics. They are freaking great, and don't expect it to be exactly like the TV Show because there are a lot of differences between the two. If you haven't read it, that is. The comics are great, very good story.
I would like to read more, but they are hard to get where I live.

Anyone got anything they can recommend or suggest I avoid? I've been reading Wacky Raceland, too, and I love it. OMG Dick Dastardly -- I want to slap him, and hug him, simultaneously.... Scooby Apocalypse is also worth checking out. It's an interesting twist on the traditional Scooby-Doo ethos. If you haven't read it yet, get DC Universe Rebirth. Other Rebirth stuff is (so far) nothing special, but that first book is well worth the read. I've been into Bombshells, too. Oh, and the Batman '66/Man From U.N.C.L.E. crossover is cute. The Green Lantern/Star Trek crossover was surprisingly excellent. For independent comics, find Sex Criminals by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky. Funny, sexy, poignant, awkward, and absolutely relatable. Be sure to look closely at every panel, because they like to throw in a lot of visual puns, sight gags, and obscure references. See also: Brimping Found a good series at a con called Miserable Americans, about a cloned Abe Lincoln and JFK on the run from the Secret Service; and from the same publisher, a book called Lackluster World, which is also amazing. And I collect the shit out of DC Elseworlds, when I can find them.

Invincible. Beautiful art and the action reminds me of DBZ. The story does too actually.

Resurrecting this thread to gush about the fact that the first issue of Midnighter and Apollo comes out tomorrow. I am beyond psyched. Anyone who has listened to me drone on about comic books can tell you Midnighter is my favorite super hero and has been for some time. I'm really excited that he's now officially getting billing on the DC label instead of an indy off shoot. Check it out if you're near a comic shop tomorrow. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Alright, so I grabbed issue one of Midnighter and Apollo after work, already read it and waiting for issue 2. It is fantastic, and you will love it if you're a fan of Midnighter and Apollo, which I am. They are easily my favorite super hero couple. Steve Orlando is a fantastic writer as well, and the art is very well done. Definitely pick this one up if you get the chance. It's issue one of a six issue mini-series and I have a feeling I'm going to love every issue.
