I feel like people haven't pointed this out enough, but it's probably an appropriate discussion since he's sorta matching that popularity at this point. Dude has more diverse flow, bars that mean shit beyond silly punchlines, can actually solid music sober, has better concepts to his records. I just think it's not even close to be honest.

Dude. This new-school fucktwits wouldn't know the first thing about rap. The majority are just spouting as many words as they can before getting tongue twisted, while others are getting paid to talk about sex, drugs and "nigga" everything.
VERY rarely are any of them in the VICINITY of what rap is truly about, and even then, it's borderline decent AT BEST.
Listen to real rap. Biggie, Pac, Dre, Snoop, Easy E, and yes, Em.
Then listen to these cut & paste wannabes. If you still think any of these new bitches are anywhere NEAR the level of REAL rap, let me know where to send your SSI check.

Most of those listed were a one or two album artist. As far as Eminem being about anything meaningful, the guy made a career off of shock factor and song after song about fictional situations.

Most of those listed were a one or two album artist. As far as Eminem being about anything meaningful, the guy made a career off of shock factor and song after song about fictional situations. A lot of Eminem's songs are based on his REAL life. There is a the occasional funny song, there is the occasional bullshit song.....but Eminem is still one of the best there is. Compared to anyone now, when Em was 'in his prime' and he wins, everytime. Fuck, I know I am in the minority, but MM2 was fucking amazing. SSLP was amazing. MMLP was amazing. MMS was amazing. I am sorry, Spenny, but you are experience Rap in an age where talent has nothing to do with getting signed. All you have to do is be catchy. Sure, Kendrick Lamar is good, I'll give you that. He is no where near as great has Eminem is, nor as great as Em was. There isn't a single person who can put words together like Em. Also maybe you should listen to some of the artist's that he suggested, not one of them are 'one or two album artists'. They laid the foundation for the shit that is out today that people think is 'genius'. I am not saying that there aren't good rappers out today, cause there are, but none of them can compete with the greats, none of them can compete with Em, and most of them are fucking garbage.

This is my topic of passion as I grew up in a musical family and always buried myself in music. When I think of the artist listed, I see artists with a few hits who either died or meme'd themselves out like Snoop.
Biggie and Pac? Very overrated imo. You had a decent amount of commercial success off of simple rhyme schemes and a surging trend that favored the East/West thing heavy. Meanwhile, ATCQ, Wu Tang, Rakim, and others were doing the actual goat shit as far as old school goes.
E was cool, but cut way too short to accurately analyze as he didn't have anything close to a full career.
As for Dre, he's the West Coast Jay Z. Take that however you wish.
The thing I find, is that many who criticize modern music don't actually listen to modern rap beyond a mainstream feature or a 30 second clip of a bad example they went into hating before it even started.
The truth is, rap evolved and many criticisms of modern music are sorta null.
"Beat fetishism" is one that gets thrown around a lot, yet, most people hyped old school rap BECAUSE of the beat being catchy.

I grew up listening to the guys who told their stories and did so on their own beat. Back in the day, you could tell each guy apart based on his sound. No specific words, just the style. Today's "artists" are a dime-a-dozen cut & paste projects. I could come up with better rhymes than these fools, but I'll never get a contract because I actually have something to SAY, plus I don't spund like these posers.
Second, Biggie and Pac were tight as hell before the divide. Part of me whole heartedly believes they CREATED the divide for the sole purpose of getting more people to check out the genre. I seriously believe they were calling each other up on the daily just to see what else they could pull.
Snoop has outlived the majority of his peers. Pac and Biggie are (believed) dead, Jay hasn't done shit since Bey took over, Easy's passing cut his career short (one thing we can agree on), and Em just doesn't have the give a fuck to throw down.
Snoop, Luda... These guys are BARELY staying alive with cameo spots, a majority of which cause me to lean towards the word "sellout"... Despite how much I hate myself for using that word.
But these wannabes? Binch of posers.

personally, I've never listened to a Kendrick Lamar song, The rap I grew up with was public enemy, beastie boys, NWA, naughty by nature, Wu Tang, and I still regularly listen to House of Pain, as far as Eminem goes Till I collapse, and Cinderella Man are my favorites. Probably adds nothing to the debate just wanted to chime in.

I'll say this. I really enjoy what I've heard from Kendrick.
Most other rap today, I actually can't stand. And I HAVE heard it.
I don't agree that Kendrick is better than Slim. But I also won't say Slim is better than Kendrick.
They're apples and oranges because they have two different.. well. Two different styles and to different backgrounds.
