Just watched this with Lady M over the weekend. Monga is a 2010 Taiwanese gangster film set in 1980s Taipei. In my opinion, it is one of the better films to have come out of Taiwan in recent years. The usual Mob film themes come into play: brotherhood, camaraderie, crime and betrayal. Worth checking out if you are unfamiliar with East Asian cinema.

Re-watched Mugamoodi the other day. It's an Indian superhero(?) movie, as well as a martial arts flick. And it's Bollywood, so there are musical numbers abound, of course. If you can get past those, though, it's actually a pretty decent story about a cocky dude with mad skills who has a change of heart, while trying to win the heart of a girl. Cheesy, I know. But then the mob kidnaps the girl, so Mugamoodi enlists the aid of his two grandfathers - one a costume designer, the other an electronics whiz - and they make him the Indian equivalent of a Batsuit, which he uses to save/get the girl.
Some of the acting is a little spotty, and oh god, the musical numbers. But all in all, it was a rather enjoyable film, with some kick ass fight scenes. I recommend it to anyone who's ever watched Adam West do the Batusi, and wished they'd played it straight.

Noroi: The CurseA Japanese found footage film about a curse/prophecy/supernatural ordeal. Some cool things but overall a very slow and boring film (except for the end). It is pretty interesting how it chooses to deliver it as a documentary and how it chooses to intercut bits and there are a few cool moments here and there but there is so much of your usual found footage nonsense and tactics that at this point I could've fallen asleep and wake up at the last third of the movie and feel like I missed nothing. It is passable but you can pass on it really. Been done better. 6/10

I was listening one of Stone Cold's podcasts with Jake "The Snake" Roberts and Stone Cold recommended "The Resurrection Of Jake The Snake". I caught it on Netflix and it was everything Stone Cold said and more. It was one of the most emotional gut wrenching documentaries that I have ever seen about wrestling since Beyond The Mat. Other that Roddy Piper & Ric Flair, The Snake was one of my favs growing up.

Last I watched at the cinema: TMNT out of he shadows. Had a double bill that day as I watched Warcraft just before. Both were actually very fun. Especially if you're a fanboy of the franchises like I am.
Also saw San Andreas last night for the first time. It was stupid.

Watching one of Gable's favorite films; Battle Royale (2000 [dir. Kinji Fukasaku])
Takeshi Kitano (aka Beat Takeshi) plays, seriously, one of the most menacing villains I've seen in a movie. How he plays it off is amazing, not exactly nuanced, but with complete confidence. Its kind of funny really, Kitano was actually psyched to work with such a legendary director as Kinji, because he wanted to learn from such a seasoned veteran, but as disappointed when the director told him to "just be himself".

Watched the Truman show again recently. I thought it was gonna be about it on and fall asleep movie then I watched the whole thing. It was so far ahead of its time it's ridiculous. Now people WANT what they forced him into. So fucked up.

It truly is one of my favorites. Who doesn't love Highschoolers killing each other? But seriously, this film is something personal to me and I am sure a handful of you have heard the story. Found this VERY sketchy Asian horror movie site which I am pretty sure killed the computer I had at the time. Watched a few movies on it, nothing amazing but def a lot of WEIRD! Until one day. Benjy and I were hanging with a highschool friend of ours who was practically always at our house, almost a resident. We did everything together at the time. Well, one point due to unfortunate circumstances, he had to move a good distance away and I believe it was his second to last week before moving, we were having our usual weekend hang out and we decided to show him the site and out of a long list we all decided that a little movie called "Battle Royale" would be the perfect movie to watch late at night. It was great in all its pixelated glory. It was funny, the whole time watching it, we would continue to turn to each other and say "if we were stuck in that situation, I am totally killing you, no question". We loved the movie but were sad to find out that there was no dvd for it in the US (and wouldn't be for a good while). It was a good last experience to have...immediately followed by a hilarious short experience of watching the god awful sequel! Which I will eventually watch again. But honestly, that site was the start of my love for Japanese splatter punk! Mikey Extreme knows whats up! Movies like Meatball Machine (still need to get that on DVD), Tokyo Gore Police (own and love), Attack Girls Swim Team vs. The Undead (or as the title I saw it under "Girls Rebel Force of Competitive Swimming") which is a nutty movie with no sense whatsoever! etc. etc. etc. I will even go through the process of reviewing them all for ya so yall have the proper mindset to seek them out! lol

Spotlight. Winner of Best Picture at the 88th Academy Awards and definitely deserving of it.
If you don't know what it's about I will warn you it isn't an easy watch by any stretch of the imagination: it's a docudrama about the Boston Globe's "Spotlight" team and their investigation of the Catholic Church child sexual abuse scandal and how it was covered up by the Church, the Police, and even the Newspapers. It's one of the least cinematic movies I've seen in a long while, and definitely one of the least cinematic films to win Best Picture in a long time which is especially interesting considering the previous Best Picture winner was the heavily stylized Birdman. It's very bare-bones and lacking in flash, and is absolutely gripping. Fantastic performances all around, especially from Mark Ruffalo.
Watch this fucking movie.
